Specialist Interests: Cataract, adult and paediatric glaucoma

Mr John Brookes is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, an internationally renowned teaching hospital for ophthalmology.

Mr Brookes is a member of the glaucoma service at Moorfields and specialises in adult and paediatric glaucoma and small incision cataract surgery using up to date techniques of phacoemulsification. He also consults at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, Middlesex where he is the lead glaucoma clinician and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists clinical tutor in ophthalmology. He also sees paediatric cases at the new 'International Children's Eye Centre' at Moorfields.

Following qualification at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, Mr Brookes trained in ophthalmology at the Western Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and numerous hospitals throughout London and Surrey.
 
After undertaking research into the molecular genetics of inherited eye diseases at Imperial College, London, Mr Brookes underwent higher specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital and a clinical fellowship in paediatric glaucoma where he trained in advanced surgical techniques in managing complex glaucoma cases in both adults and children.

Mr Brookes is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and has published widely in ophthalmology as well as writing several book chapters in cataract and glaucoma surgery.

As well as a busy NHS practice, Mr Brookes consults at the private wing of Moorfields Eye Hospital (John Saunders Suite), Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow and Harley Street, London.

In his spare time, Mr Brookes has completed three London marathons for eye charities and has a private pilot's licence. He also plays the violin.

Each year, Mr Brookes travels to India with the charity, 'Second Sight' to perform cataract surgery on some of the poorest people in the world.
